Carat Weight
Carat weight is the standard unit of measurement for a diamonds weight, not to be confused with the size of a diamond. One carat equals 200 milligrams or 1/5 gram. Diamonds that weigh less than one carat can also be referred to as points. For example if a diamond weighs .75ct it can be referred to as a 75 point diamond. Carat weight is a big factor when pricing a diamond because the larger a diamond is the rarer it is.

History of Carat Weight
The carat became a true global standard around the early 1900s. Until 1912 to 1913 carat weight varied based on the country of origin. India, the United States, and France all could have been said to have a one carat name but none really would weigh the same. Today the carat standard is based on the metric systems carat.
What the best size for you or your partner?
Choosing the right carat weight has a lot to do with the person you are purchasing for. The budget, the persons style, the size of there fingers, setting size, etc., it all comes in to play. Here are some things to keep in mind. If a budget has been determined there are a wide variety of diamonds available in different carat weights to fit your budgetary needs. If your partner has classic or modern contemporary style, choose the style of diamond, and carat weight that best suits them. If your partner has small fingers the diamond will appear bigger than it really is, and vice versa. If you have purchased the setting pick a carat size that will fit in the setting. Keep these points in mind when looking for the best size for your partner.
